Local places to eat

Montegabbione

Il peperoncino

Good inexpensive food and wine. Particularly famous for its pizze.

Fabro

Several bars and some serve food. They are near the station. Inexpensive pizze and pasta dishes. La Perla near the station is particularly good. It can be described a cheap and cheerful but that expression is often a coded massage not to expect much. In this case the food is good as well as being reasonably priced.

Santa Maria

Located between Fabro and Monteleone has a good ristorante for pizze.

Monteleone

A beautiful walled hill top town. Good pizze available outside the walls at a pizzeria near the round about. For more atmosphere and some unusual dishes there is the Antica Stalla inside the town.

Citta della Pieve

The city of Perugino has a good ristorante called Locanda dalla Picca on the main road as you approach Citta della Pieve from Monteleone.

San Vito in monte

A tiny village in the hill country between us and Perugia has a good ristorante which serves fish!! Ideal for lunch after a drive through the wild hills.

Orvieto

Large range of ristorante serving typical Umbrian dishes.

We recommend:

La Grotta, - probably the best traditional Umbrian food. Brodo is not to be missed. The ristorante is 50 M. from the Via del Duomo at the small piazza half way down this street.

Giglio d'Oro - in the Piazza del Duomo - excellent food, quiet and elegant.

Vinosus - also in Piazza del Duomo. An outside terrace overlooking the Duomo is pleasant on summer evenings - light meals - often fresh fish.

Trattoria del Orso - modest but good - local food, well cooked. Just off the Piazza della Republica.

Asino d'Oro - outside terrace in summer. Interesting food and pleasant ambience. Located down a tiny alley between the Corso and the Piazza del Popolo.

After meals go to Piazza del Duomo to Pasquinetti for ice cream - try the fresh fruit flavors. They really are made from fresh fruit.

Often one does not want a full ristorante meal and there are a couple of wine bars in Orvieto that serve snacks. There is one under the clock town in the Piazza del Duomo that serves the classic Umbria porchetta rolls with a wide range of wines also by the glass and another in the Via del Corso near the Piazza Republica that has hearty soups.
