Modern Chiusi is an important railway junction on the mainline between Rome and Florence but the old town on the hill above has retained its charm. Chiusi was one of the most important Etruscan cities in the period before the Roman Empire and the Museum has probably the best collections of Etruscan objects outside Rome. The church tower has a Roman base, there is a Roman cistern under the Piazza and the church has extensive marble mosaic pavements.
